Privacy policy
Last updated: 7 October 2026 · applies to the Overlander Cockpit app and this website. This translation is provided for convenience; the German version is authoritative.
In short
- No account, no user ID, no advertising, no analytics, tracking or crash-reporting tools.
- Recordings, saved places, search history and settings stay on your device.
- Some features need data from the internet and send your position or a map section to the respective service for that. Which service receives what is listed below.

This website
The site is static: no cookies, no forms, no embedded third-party content. Fonts are served from our own server, not loaded from Google.
When you visit, the web server necessarily processes your IP address, date and time, the page requested and your browser’s details. The site’s own web server keeps no access logs; whatever the upstream infrastructure logs for secure operation is deleted after 7 days at the latest. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in secure operation (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR).
The website and the app’s own services (all addresses under overlandercockpit.com) run on servers in a data centre of Hetzner Online GmbH in Germany; a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR is in place with the data centre operator.
The app
Permissions on the device
- Location (only “While Using the App”): for map, navigation, speed, weather, hints ahead and air traffic. In the background only during navigation or a running recording.
- Motion and air pressure: for tilt and altitude. Stays on the device.
- Bluetooth: only for the GPS relay – an iPhone sends its position to an iPad in the same vehicle. The position goes directly from device to device, not over the internet.
- Live Activity: the next manoeuvre in the Dynamic Island, local only, without a push service.
What stays on the device
Settings, saved places (with address), recent destinations, GPX recordings, downloaded maps and cached weather and map images. GPX recordings and a technical log for troubleshooting are kept in the app’s documents folder and are visible in the Files app; the log may contain route start points and destination names. None of this is uploaded – unless you share a file yourself.
Services the app talks to
Each of these services also technically sees your IP address. The legal basis is providing the feature you use (Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR) or our legitimate interest in a working app (point (f)).

Our own services and the authorities listed process data in the EU/EEA or in Switzerland (adequacy decision). Apple processes via Apple Distribution International in Ireland; the parent company Apple Inc. (USA) is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. Apart from Apple, the app does not contact any third-party service directly; if one of our services fails, it shows the last state.
